Frequently Asked Questions about Home Heating Oil:
What is home heating oil?
Residential heating oil is a refined petroleum fuel used to heat homes through oil-fired furnaces and boilers. Most homes in the Northeast store heating oil in an indoor or outdoor storage tank.
How often do I need heating oil delivered?
Delivery frequency depends on:
- Home size
- Outdoor temperature
- Insulation
- Tank size
- Household heating habits
Most homes require several deliveries during the winter season.
How much heating oil does a home in Eastern Massachusetts use?
A typical home in Eastern Massachusetts uses 700 to 1,000 gallons of heating oil annually, although actual usage varies based on temperatures and home efficiency.
How quickly can heating oil be delivered?
Delivery times depend on weather, demand, and service area. Coan oil offers both automatic delivery and will-call delivery. Emergency fuel deliveries can be arranged.
What is automatic residential fuel oil delivery?
Automatic residential fuel oil delivery is a service where your heating oil provider tracks your fuel usage and automatically schedules refills before your tank runs empty. Instead of manually checking the tank gauge and calling to schedule a delivery ("will-call"), you enjoy continuous, hands-off heating.
What is will-call fuel oil delivery?
Will-call fuel oil delivery, also called C.O.D. delivery, is a self-managed service where you actively monitor your heating oil tank and call or order online when you need a refill. It puts you in control of your fuel budget and delivery timing, but leaves you responsible for avoiding an empty tank. At Coan Oil, you can order your fuel online whenever you need it.
What is Bioheat® fuel?
The home heating oil that Coan Oil delivers is called Bioheat® fuel – a blend of heating oil with biodiesel, a renewable, low-carbon biodegradable fuel produced in the USA from surplus agricultural products.

What Is the Right Heating Oil Delivery Option for Me?
COD Delivery
What it is: Also called “will-call” delivery, COD delivery allows you to self-manage your own heating fuel deliveries by monitoring your oil tank’s gauge and calling for or ordering your fuel online.
Who it's best for: COD delivery puts you in control of your fuel budget and delivery timing.
Automatic Delivery
What it is: Your heating oil provider tracks your fuel usage and automatically schedules refills before your tank runs empty. Instead of manually checking the tank gauge and calling to schedule a delivery ("will-call"), you enjoy continuous, hands-off heating.
How your fuel oil company knows when to deliver: With automatic oil delivery, your home heating oil dealer monitors your fuel tank levels and schedule service based on weather conditions, the type of system you have, your home’s energy efficiency, and your past usage. When your tank reaches one fourth of its capacity, a delivery is automatically scheduled. You don’t have to do anything, and your peace of mind is guaranteed.

All About Residential Heating Oil
Winters in the western Boston suburbs can be brutal – and require a home heating fuel that not only keeps you warm but is also economical, safe, and clean. So, we’d like to explain everything you ever wanted to know about heating oil, and then some!
HEATING OIL
What is #2 heating oil?
No. 2 fuel oil (sometimes called “boiler oil” or “furnace oil”) is a petroleum distillate primarily used as home heating oil for residential boilers and furnaces.
Is heating oil the same as diesel?
Heating oil is chemically nearly identical to standard diesel fuel, but is dyed red and untaxed because it is intended for home heating rather than on-highway vehicle use.
What is ultra-low sulfur heating oil?
Ultra-low sulfur heating oil (ULSHO) is a cleaner-burning home heating fuel that contains a maximum of 15 parts per million (ppm) of sulfur. By comparison, traditional heating oil can contain up to 4,000 ppm. This near-total removal of sulfur makes it highly efficient and environmentally friendly.
How hot is fuel oil compared to other fuels?
Fuel oil burns much hotter than other common heating fuels. It generates around 138,500 BTUs per gallon. (A BTU, or British Thermal Unit, is the amount of energy needed to raise one pound of water by 1°F.) In contrast ...
- Propane produces about 91,500 BTUs per gallon.
- Natural gas produces about1,030 BTUs per cubic foot. It burns at a lower maximum temperature than fuel oil.
How safe is residential heating oil?
While fuel oil is intensely hot during combustion, it is one of the safest fuels to store. Unlike gas, it is not explosive. It must be heated to 140°F to vaporize and burn. You can store large quantities in a tank on your property.
Is there enough heating oil to go around?
Yes, there is enough physical supply of home heating oil to go around. The U.S. government maintains the Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve to protect the region from sudden emergencies.
Can heating oil freeze?
Heating oil does not freeze solid like water. Instead, it goes through a process called gelling (or waxing), which makes the oil too thick to pump through your system. For more details, see the question below.
How does heating oil perform in cold weather?
In freezing temperatures, standard heating oil can thicken, or “gel,” making it sluggish. If the temperature drops below 16°F, the wax inside the oil crystallizes. This gel can clog your filters and block your furnace's atomizing nozzle. However, many fuel dealers treat their heating oil with a special additive that cleans your system by reducing sediment build-up that may already be in your tank, pipes, filters and nozzle, and inhibits corrosion and rust in your tank and fuel lines. The result is a heating system that runs more effectively while improving your equipment’s life expectancy.
Another cold weather tip: Keep your tank at least half full lowers the chance that ice or condensation will form inside it.
What is the shelf life of residential heating oil?
Heating oil has a shelf life of 18 to 24 months. Once in your residential tank, its duration depends on its usage rate, how large your tank is, your home's square footage, the outdoor temperature, and your specific heating system.
What environmental improvements have been made to heating oil?
The oil in your tank right now is certainly not your grandfather’s (or even your father’s) heating oil. Heating oil has transformed into a much cleaner, greener fuel. The biggest changes include:
- Ultra-Low Sulfur Heating Oil (ULSHO): Removing nearly all sulfur from heating oil reduces sulfur dioxide emissions by roughly 99% compared to older oil.
- Bioheat® Fuel: This blend of ULSHO and renewable biodiesel made from plant oils, animal fats, or used cooking grease, cuts greenhouse gas emissions significantly. Plus, Bioheat® fuel acts like a lubricant. It helps your furnace parts last longer and requires less maintenance. To read more about Coan Oil’s Bioheat® fuel, tap here.
Using these clean blends reduces soot and particulate matter by over 85%, improving the air both outside and inside your home.
What can I do to keep my heating oil system in top shape?
Keep your heating oil system running safely and efficiently by scheduling annual professional tune-ups, replacing air and oil filters regularly, and keeping your tank at least a quarter full. These simple steps prevent costly breakdowns, lower fuel use, and keep your fuel lines clear. They also prevent small problems from turning into giant, expensive headaches!
HEATING OIL STORAGE TANKS
What are the benefits of heating oil storage tanks?
- Heating oil tanks give homeowners complete control over their energy supply.
- Having a tank on your property means grid independence. If a gas or electric grid fails, your independent heating system keeps running.
- Modern tanks are very durable, built with double-wall protection to help prevent releases. Many are made of corrosion-resistant plastic and fiberglass to last for decades.
What size heating oil tank do I have?
The most common residential heating oil tank holds 275 gallons. Newer tanks have the size on a metal tag.
How long does a heating oil tank last?
A heating oil tank typically lasts 15 to 30 years. The exact lifespan depends heavily on whether it is stored above ground or underground, the material it is made of, and how well it is maintained.
How full should my oil storage tank stay?
You should always keep your heating oil tank at least half full and schedule a refill when it drops to the quarter-tank mark. This safety buffer prevents your heating system from breaking down and protects your tank from expensive internal damage.
What happens if I run out of heating oil?
Running out of heating oil instantly cuts off your heat and hot water. While modern furnaces feature automatic safety shut-offs to prevent major engine damage, an empty tank can pull sludge from the bottom of the tank into the lines, potentially clogging filters or nozzles.
How do I check my heating oil tank level?
Checking your fuel oil tank level is easy. Most tanks have a clear plastic gauge on top that shows if it is Full (F), Empty (E), or somewhere in-between. You should order more oil when the level gets to about one-quarter (1/4) full to avoid running out.
Another method used to check the level of heating oil in the tank, especially if your tank gauge is broken or missing, is to measure the oil manually by using a dipstick.
- Remove the cap: Unscrew the cap or plug from the top of the tank.
- Dip the stick: Lower a clean stick (like a long wooden dowel) straight down until it hits the bottom of the tank.
- Measure the oil: Pull the stick out and measure the length of the wet, oily section.
- Calculate gallons: To find exactly how many gallons you have left, you will need to compare this wet measurement to a manufacturer’s tank chart for your tank size (most standard residential tanks hold 250 to 275 gallons).
You can also upgrade to a Wi-Fi-enabled smart oil gauge. These devices monitor your fuel level daily and send alerts directly to your smartphone so you never have to check the tank yourself.
What can I do to take care of my oil storage tank?
In addition to not letting it run empty (see above), routinely look at the outside of your tank for rust spots, wet spots, or a strong smell of oil. Also remember to keep your tank full during the summer, to reduce the amount of empty air space inside, which lowers moisture condensation and prevents interior rust.
All About Residential Heating Oil Prices
6 Reasons Why Heating Oil Prices Change So Much
International conflicts. Supply chain interruptions. Global market demand. Unprecedented winter weather. Heating oil prices -- indeed, all energy prices -- are affected by these factors. Here are six reasons why residential heating oil prices fluctuate:
- Seasonal Pricing: Heating oil prices usually climb during the winter (October through March) because households use the vast majority of their fuel during this period. In contrast, spring and summer offer lower prices due to reduced demand.
- Global Market Factors: Worldwide supply and demand, international trade relationships, inflation, and geopolitical events all shift the price. If global economic activity drops, or refineries slow down production, local prices will increase.
- Crude Oil Prices: Heating oil is a refined product of crude oil. As a result, the price of home heating oil directly mimics the price of raw crude oil. If crude oil hits multi-year highs on the commodity market, your per-gallon residential heating cost will also increase.
- Delivery Quantity: Ordering fuel in larger quantities—like filling a 275-gallon tank completely—generally results in a lower per-gallon price. Conversely, emergency deliveries or "will-call" orders of small amounts usually cost more per gallon. This is due to the fixed transportation and labor costs suppliers face for delivery logistics.
- Weather Demand: The weather is highly unpredictable (especially in Coan Oil’s Massachusetts service area). A deep cold snap or multiple blizzards in a short time forces everyone to burn oil faster and call for refills simultaneously. This sudden surge in local demand can cause short-term price spikes.
- Taxes: Final home heating fuel prices include federal, state, and local taxes, along with environmental or regulatory fees. Because tax rates vary significantly depending on your exact state and municipality, final heating bills differ across state lines.
