How Low Batteries Affect Your Thermostat

admin  -   11:45 am  -   May 14th, 2024

At Coan Oil, we know keeping your home comfortable year-round is important, especially during extreme Massachusetts weather. Your thermostat plays a key role in that, and it relies on batteries to function properly. But what happens when those batteries start to die? Here are some signs that your thermostat might have low batteries.

  • Dim or flickering display: This is usually a telltale sign that your thermostat’s battery needs replacement.
  • Increased energy bills: A low battery in your thermostat can decrease the efficiency of your HVAC system, and you might see higher energy bills as a result.
  • Inaccurate temperature readings: A thermostat with low batteries may struggle to read the room temperature correctly, reading to discomfort and wasted energy.
  • Disrupted programming: Your thermostat’s programs may not function as intended, causing your heating or cooling system to run at the wrong times.
  • Complete failure: In the worst-case scenario, a dead or dying battery can render your thermostat completely inoperable, leaving you with no control over your home’s temperature.

Replacing your thermostat’s batteries is simple – just release your thermostat from its wall plate (check your user manual for more information), locate the batteries, pry them out gently, and replace with fresh ones, usually AA or AAA. Check them at the beginning and end of the heating and/or cooling season to ensure year-round comfort.

If you’ve replaced the batteries and you’re still facing issues with your home’s comfort, this could indicate an underlying issue with your home comfort system, but don’t worry! Our expert technicians here at Coan Oil will troubleshoot the issue, and repair it promptly to get your system back up and running again.
